Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series:

Between 1916 and 1922 and again in 1924, the DTR worked out of field stations in British Guiana. These included Kalacoon, the first DTR field station, in 1916 and 1917, and a field station at Kartabo, where the DTR worked from 1919 to 1922 and in 1924. This subseries includes illustrations known to be by Isabel Cooper and Helen Damrosch Tee-Van; it is likely that some of the illustrations are also by Rachel Hartley, Paul Griswold Howes, and Anna Taylor.

In 1950, the DTR established Simla, its final field station, in Trinidad’s Arima Valley. This subseries includes illustrations known to be by Douglas Boyden. Many of the illustrations depict plants and insects, particularly butterflies. Notable within this subseries are 24 paintings of fungi by Boyden.

Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series: The Arcturus Expedition is considered the DTR’s first official oceanographic expedition. In 1925, the staff embarked on a six-month cruise aboard the Arcturus to investigate the Sargasso Sea in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Humboldt Current in the Pacific Ocean. Additional work was conducted in the Hudson Canyon (or Hudson Gorge, as the DTR referred to it), off the coast of New York.
