Expedition illustrations, 1916 - 1953

 Series

Scope and Contents

This series consists of around 2,000 color and black-and-white illustrations of living and non-living specimens created by the field staff of the New York Zoological Society’s Department of Tropical Research during expeditions between 1916 and 1953. Subjects include various tropical terrestrial and marine flora and fauna; a majority of the illustrations include handwritten identifications of the subjects and other information on their reverse sides. The vast majority of the illustrations measure approximately 11.5x14.5 inches.

Each subseries notes artists that are known—through their signatures or other records in the WCS Archives—to have created illustrations within that subseries. It is possible that a subseries may include unsigned works by other artists.
