Abstract
This collection consists of records related to the work of the New York Zoological Society’s Department of Tropical Research, which conducted ecological expeditions between 1916 and 1964. These records appear to have been transferred to the Wildlife Conservation Society Archives after the primary DTR collections were processed, and they supplement those collections (WCS Archives Collections 1005A-1005J). The majority of the records were created by DTR Director William Beebe and Assistant Director John Tee-Van. Heavily represented within the collection are correspondence, field notes, published materials, and artifacts; notable among these are records and artifacts related to the DTR’s deep-sea explorations in the Bathysphere during the early 1930s.
Arrangement
This collection consists of nine series. Series 1 has twelve subseries; Series 2 has four subseries; Series 3, 4, and 5 each have two subseries; Series 6 has three subseries; Series 7 has no subseries; Series 8 has five subseries; and Series 9 has no subseries. Records are arranged chronologically within each subseries, or in the cases where there are no subseries, within the series.
This collection supplements WCS Archives Collections 1005A-1005J. When possible, the series and subseries in this collection mirror the arrangements found in those collections—with this collection’s series titles corresponding to those collections’ titles and this collection’s subseries titles corresponding to those collections’ series titles. (For example, because “The Nth birthday of William Beebe by William Gregory” from this collection resembles material found in Collection 1005A, “Department of Tropical Research general records,” series “Records by or about William Beebe,” it has been placed in the series “General records,” subseries “Records by or about William Beebe.” Because of this attempt to mirror the previously processed collections’ arrangement, some subseries only have one file. In the cases where records from this collection fall outside the scope of the previously processed collections’ arrangement, new series and/or subseries have been created. See the Scope and Content notes for each series and subseries for more information.
The order of the series and subseries follows the order of the previously processed collections, with new series and subseries following existing ones.
