Scope and Content

In addition to records that document the activities of Madison Grant and W. Redmond Cross as President of the New York Zoological Society, this collection includes some files created during Grant's tenure as Secretary, 1895-1925, and Chairman of the Executive Committee, 1909-1937. Additionally, the records also include some correspondence of Fairfield Osborn, reflecting his activities as Secretary from 1935 to 1940.

Among the subjects represented here are the Society's art gallery, wildlife conservation, and the Save the Redwoods League. The bulk of the records deal with endowments, insurance, and legal affairs. William Beebe is represented by a series of reports on the Arcturus and Bermuda expeditions of the Department of Tropical Research.

Biographical Note

Madison Grant (1865-1937) was the first Secretary to the Board of Managers (Trustees) of the New York Zoological Society. He became Secretary in 1895 and resigned in 1925 to assume the office of NYZS President. He served as President until 1937.

William Redmond Cross (June 8th, 1874-November 16, 1940) was NYZS President from June 29, 1937 to June 25, 1940. He served as a member of the NYZS Board of Trustees from April 10, 1919 until his death.

Abstract

Madison Grant (1865-1937) was President of the New York Zoological Society from 1925 until his death in 1937. W. Redmond Cross (1874-1940) succeeded Grant in 1937 and served as President until his retirement in 1940. The bulk of this collection reflects the activities of Grant and Cross during their respective tenures as President. Among the subjects represented here are the Society's art gallery, wildlife conservation, and the Save the Redwoods League. The bulk of the records deal with endowments, insurance, and legal affairs.
