Scope and Contents
The Arcturus Expedition is considered the DTR’s first official oceanographic expedition. In 1925, the staff embarked on a six-month cruise aboard the Arcturus to investigate the Sargasso Sea in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Humboldt Current in the Pacific Ocean. Additional work was conducted in the Hudson Canyon (or Hudson Gorge, as the DTR referred to it), off the coast of New York. This subseries includes illustrations known to be by Isabel Cooper, Donald Dickerman, Dwight Franklin, and Helen Damrosch Tee-Van. Among this subseries are four paintings on board by Franklin of a volcano eruption on Albermarle (Isabela) Island in the Galápagos.
